(בראשית כ״ח:י׳) וַיֵּצֵא יַעֲקֹב מִבְּאֵר שָׁבַע וַיֵּלֶךְ חָרָנָה. רַבִּי חִיָּיא פָּתַח וְאָמַר, (קהלת א׳:ה׳) וזָרַח הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ וּבָא הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ ואֶל מְקוֹמוֹ שׁוֹאֵף זוֹרֵחַ הוּא שָׁם, הַאי קְרָא אוּקְמוּהָ. אֲבָל וְזָרַח הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ דָּא יַעֲקֹב, כַּד הֲוָה בִּבְאֵר שָׁבַע. וּבָא הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ, כַּד אֲזַל לְחָרָן, דִּכְתִיב, (בראשית כ״ח:י״א) וַיָּלֶן שָׁם כִּי בָא הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ. וְאֶל מְקוֹמוֹ שׁוֹאֵף זוִֹרִחַ, דִּכְתִיב וַיִּשְׁכַּב בַּמָּקוֹם הַהוּא.AND JACOB WENT OUT PROM BEER-SHEBA AND WENT TOWARD HARAN. R. Hiya drew a parallel between this statement and the verse: The sun ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he ariseth (Eccles. 1, 5). ‘The sun arising’, he said, ‘is parallel to Jacob when in Beersheba; and “the sun going down” to Jacob on his way to Haran, when, as we read, “he tarried there all night, because the sun was set”; and as the “sun hasteth to his place where he ariseth”, so Jacob “lay down in that place to sleep”.

וְתָּא חֲזֵי, שִׁמְשָׁא אַף עַל גַּב דְּנָהִיר לְכָל עַלְמָא, מַטְלָנוֹי בִּתְרֵין סִטְרִין אִינוּן, כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמֵר, (קהלת א׳:ו׳) הוֹלֵךְ אֶל דָּרוֹם וְסוֹבֵב אֶל צָפוֹן, בְּגִין דְּדָא יָמִינָא וְדָא שְׂמָאלָא. (ובגין) וְנָגִיד וְנָפִיק כָּל יוֹמָא מִסִּטְרָא דְּמִזְרָח, וְאָזִיל לְסִטְרָא דְּדָרוֹם, (נ"א דמערב) וּלְבָתַר לְסִטְרָא דְּצָפוֹן, וּמִסִּטְרָא דְּצָפוֹן לְסִטְרָא דְּמַעֲרָב, וּכְדֵין שִׁמְשָׁא אִתְכְּנִישׁ, וְאָזִיל לְגַבֵּי מַעֲרָב. נָפִיק מִמִּזְרָח דִּכְתִיב, (בראשית כ״ח:י׳) וַיֵּצֵא יַעֲקֹב מִבְּאֵר שָׁבַע. וְאָזִיל לְמַעֲרָב דִּכְתִיב וַיֵּלֶךְ חָרָנָה.Observe that although the sun illumines all quarters of the world, yet he travels only in two directions, as we read: “He goeth toward the South, and turneth about unto the North” (Eccles. 1, 6), one being the right and the other the left. Every day, too, he emerges from the East, turns to the South, then to the North, then toward the Western side, and finally is gathered unto the West. As the sun emerges from the East, so Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and as the sun turns toward the West, so Jacob went toward Haran.’

רִבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אָמַר, נָפִיק מִכְּלָלָא דְאַרְעָא דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, דִּכְתִיב וַיֵּצֵא יַעֲקֹב מִבְּאֵר שָׁבַע. וְאֲזַל לִרְשׁוּ אָחֳרָא, דִּכְתִיב וַיֵּלֶךְ חָרָנָה. (ס"א נפיק ממזרח, דכתיב ויצא יעקב מבאר שבע, דא שמטה. דנטיל מעומקא עלאה, נהירו דנהיר, ואזיל למערב, דכתיב וילך חרנה, אתר דדינא ורוגזא תמן.R. Simeon said that Jacob “went forth” from the ambit of the Land of Israel, and he “went into” another sphere, as is implied in the sentence, “and he went toward Haran” (lit. strange, alien).

רבי יוסי מוקי האי קרא בגלותא, בקדמיתא הוה נחית נהירו מעומקא עלאה ויעקב הוה נטיל ליה, ואזיל לגבי באר שבע, (במדבר כ״א:י״ח) באר דחפרוה שרים, דהוה נהיר מתמן, ואשלים לההוא באר בכל שלימו. וביומי דגלותא, נטיל מהאי באר שבע, ואזיל לגבי חרנה, דכתיב וילך חרנה, כלומר חרון אף, ומאי היא חרון אפו דקודשא בריך הוא, דרגא בישא), אַרְעָא דִּרְשׁוּ אָחֳרָא.

אָמַר רַבִּי חִיָּיא, כַּד אָזִיל שִׁמְשָׁא לְמַעֲרָב, הַאי מַעֲרָב אִקְרֵי מְקוֹמוֹ דְּשִׁמְשָׁא, כֻּרְסְיָיא דִילֵיהּ, אֲתַר דְּשַׁרְיָא עֲלֵיהּ, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, (קהלת א׳:ה׳) וְאֶל מְקוֹמוֹ שׁוֹאֵף זוֹרֵחַ הוּא שָׁם, דְּאָזִיל לְגַבֵּיהּ לְאַנְהָרָא עֲלֵיהּ, וְנָטִיל כָּל נְהוֹרִין וְכָנִישׁ לוֹן לְגַבֵּיהּ.R. Hiya said: ‘When the sun goes down to the West, the West is called the place of the sun and his throne, the place in which he abides, and to which he gathers in all his radiance.
