זה זמן רב אשר מוסר כליותי ירדפני יום יום, לצאת מגדרי ולחבר איזה חיבור יסודי בדבר נשמת היהדות והדת ובידיעת מקוריות חכמת הקבלה ולהפיצו בקרב העם, באופן שישיגו מתוכו הכרות והבנה בכלל הדברים העומדים ברומו של עולם כראוי, באופיים וצביונם האמיתי.I have long been plagued by daily pangs of conscience urging me to go beyond my own confines and write a comprehensive essay on the soul of Judaism and its religion and the knowledge of the origins of the wisdom of Kabbalah and to distribute it in public so people will gain from it proper knowledge and general understanding of these very important subjects, according to their true nature and character.

ולפנים בישראל בטרם שנתגלתה בעולם מלאכת הדפוס, לא היו בקרבנו ספרים מזויפים בעניינים הנוגעים לנשמת היהדות וכו'. משום שכמעט לא היה בקרבנו איזה מחבר בלתי אחראי על דבריו. והיה זה מטעם פשוט: כי אדם בלתי אחראי, הנה על פי רוב איננו מהמפורסמים. לפיכך אם במקרה יצא אחד והעיז פניו לחבר חיבור כזה, הרי לא היה כדאי לשום מעתיק להעתיק את ספרו כי לא ישלמו לו בעד טרחתו שהיה עולה כרגיל סכום חשוב, ונמצא מאליו שהיה משפטו חרוץ להאבד מתוך הקהל.In past eras, in the Jewish world, before the printing press became available in the world, we had no fake books discussing the soul of Judaism and similar subjects, since there was almost no author irresponsible in his words in our midst. The reason is simple: an irresponsible person in most cases is not famous. Thus, if by any chance one dared to write such a composition, no copier would find copying the book profitable, because he would not be compensated for his work, which usually amounts to a considerable sum. Thus, the author would be destined to be forgotten.

ובעת ההיא גם יודעי דבר לא היה להם שום ענין ותביעה לחבר ספרים מסוג הנ"ל, משום שהידיעות הללו אינן נחוצות להמון העם. אלא להיפך, היה להם ענין להסתיר הדבר בחדרי חדרים, מטעם "כבוד אלהים הסתר דבר". כי נצטווינו להסתיר את נשמת התורה והעבודה מאותם שאינם צריכים לה או אינם כדאים לה, ולא לזלזל בה להציגה בחלונות ראווה לעומת תאוותם של המסתכלים בארובות או בעלי התפארות. כי כן כבוד אלהים מחייב אותנו.At that time, even the knowledgeable had no interest in or were asked to author books of this kind, since this knowledge is unnecessary for the average person. On the contrary, it was in their interest to keep the matters hidden as “It is the glory of God to conceal a thing” (Proverbs 25:2) since we were commanded to hide the soul of the Torah and service from those who do not need it or do not merit it, so it would not be belittled or displayed for the interest of those who look at it through a peephole or the boastful, for we are beholden to the glory of God.

אולם מעת שמלאכת הדפוס נתפשטה בעולם, ואין המחברים צריכים יותר למעתיקים דבריהם ונתבטל מחירו הגבוה של הספר – הנה עם זה הוכנה הדרך גם למחברים בלתי אחראים למעשיהם, לעשות ספרים לכל אַוַּת נפשם לפרנסה ולכבוד וכדומה, ואת עצם מעשה ידיהם אינם מביאים בחשבון כלל ולפועל ידיהם לא יביטו כלל.But now that the art of printing is widespread, authors no longer need copiers, and the high price of books has plummeted. This, however, paved the way for irresponsible authors to author books as they please, for gain or for glory and the like. They do not examine their own actions; nor do they consider their handiwork.

ומעת ההיא התחילו להתרבות הספרים גם מן הסוג האמור לעיל. אשר בלי שום לימוד וקבלה פה אל פה מרב מוסמך לכך, ואפילו בחסרון ידיעה בכל אותם הספרים הקדמונים שיש להם שייכות לסוג הזה, הולכים ומוציאים סברות מדמם ובשרם עצמם ומכל בּוּקֵי סְרִיקֵי, ותולין הדברים ברומו של עולם לצייר בזה נשמת האומה וכל אוצרה הכביר. וככסילים לא ידעו להיזהר, גם אין להם דרך לידע זאת אשר מביאים לדורות דעות משובשות. ובתמור (תמורת) תאוותיהם הקטנטנות, חוטאים ומחטיאים את הרבים לדורות.Books of that kind started to proliferate since that time, involving no study of Kabbalah or oral transmission from a qualified Rabbi. Even without knowledge of all those ancient books that pertain to the subject, their authors produce conjectures from their own flesh and blood, containing idle falsehoods. They attribute the words to the loftiest ideas to thus mold the nation’s soul and its immense treasure. Like fools, they know not how to beware; nor do they have a way to know that they introduce erroneous opinions to generations. In exchange for their miniscule desires, they sin and cause many to sin for generations to come.
