שאלות וחקירותא. רצוני בהקדמה זו לברר איזה דברים פשוטים לכאורה, כלומר אשר ידי הכל ממשמשות בהם והרבה דיו נשפכה בכדי לבררם, ובכל זאת עדיין לא הגענו בהם לידי ידיעה ברורה ומספקת.In this introduction [to the Zohar] I would like to clarify certain ideas that many have touched upon, much has been written on, but still its depths has not been perceived. My questions are:

שאלה א': מה מהותנו.1. What is our essence?

שאלה ב': מה תפקידנו בשלשלת המציאות הארוכה, שאנו טבעות קטנות הימנה.2. What is our role in this reality, that each of us is but a small link?

שאלה ג': הנה כשאנו מסתכלים על עצמנו, אנו מרגישים את עצמנו מקולקלים ושפלים עד שאין כמונו לגנות – וכשאנו מסתכלים על הפועל שעשה אותנו, הרי אנו מחויבים להימצא ברום המעלות שאין כמוהו לשבח. כי הכרח הוא שמפועל השלם תצאנה פעולות שלמות.3. When we look around us, we see that humanity has many faults, but when we think about the One who created us, we should be superior and perfect; for a high caliber manufacturer (Creator), necessitates a quality product.

שאלה ד': לפי שהשכל מחייב, הלא הוא ית' הטוב ומטיב שאין למעלה הימנו ית', ואיך ברא מלכתחילה כל כך הרבה בריות שתתענינה ותתייסרנה בכל ימי היותן, והלא מדרך הטוב להטיב, ועל כל פנים לא להרע כל כך.4. Why would a loving Creator, create beings, many of whom suffer throughout their lives. Shouldn't a compassionate Creator create goodness, and especially not create pain?
