מתני' בתולה נשאת ליום הרביעי - תקנת חכמים היא שתנשא ברביעי בשבת כדמפרש טעמא:Mishna: A virgin marries on the fourth day - It is a Rabbinical decree that she shall marry on the fourth day of the week as the Mishna will explain.

שפעמים בשבת - אבתולה קאי:For twice in a week- it is discussing the maiden.

בשני ובחמישי - אחת מעשר תקנות שתקן עזרא בבבא קמא בפרק מרובה (בבא קמא דף פב.) מפרש לכולהו ולכך תקנו שתנשא ברביעי שאם היה לו טענת בתולים ישכים לב"ד בעוד כעסו עליו [ואם יש שהות בינתים יש לחוש] שמא יתפייס ותתקרר דעתו ויקיימנה ושמא היא זינתה תחתיו ונאסרה עליו כדילפינן (סוטה דף כח.) מונסתרה והיא נטמאה ומתוך שיבא לבית דין יתברר הדבר כשיצא הקול שמא יבואו עדים ובגמר' פריך ותינשא באחד בשבת:On the Second and the Fifth - It is one of the ten decrees established by Ezra, all of which are explained [on the Tractate] Bava Kamma chapter 'Meruba', and therefore [the sages] decreed she shall marry on the fourth, for if there is any claim on her virginity he would wake up early to got to the Beit Din while his anger is still upon him. For if [more] time where to transpire in between, we could suspect that perhaps he might come to terms [with it] and cool down his mind, and will stand by her, and perhaps she cohabited [with someone else] while already under his domain (engaged to him), and she becomes forbidden to him, as we learn (Sota page 28a): and she secluded herself in secret and she became impure [to him], and by coming before the Beit Din [maybe] it will become clarified when the matter becomes public [lit. when the voice goes out], perhaps witnesses will come [to verify this possibility]. The Gemara objects and [argues they should be able to] marry on the first day of the week.

גמ' לפי ששנינו כו' - לקמן מקשי עלה:Gemara: seeing as it was taught, etc. - Later on an objection [is presented by the gemara] upon this.

הגיע זמן ולא נישאו - לקמן בפרק אע"פ תנן נותנין לבתולה שנים עשר חדש משתבעה הבעל והזהיר על הנישואין לפרנס עצמה בתכשיטין. לפרנס קנדיר"ר בלע"ז. ולאלמנה שלשים יום:The time came and she was not married - Later on in chapter 'Af al pi' (57a), it is taught from a mishna: A virgin is given twelve months from when the husband declares his desire for her, and gives notice concerning the marriage so as to let herself prepare the adornments/jewlery. - L'farnes: in the foreign language [of Old French]: conréer [(to prepare, to equip, to adorn)]. - And to a widow, [she is given] thirty days.
